Crossing Borders and Overcoming Challenges: The Inspirational Journey of Fernanda

In the land of opportunity, countless individuals embark on transformative journeys, seeking new horizons and adventures. Among these determined souls is Fernanda, a spirited Brazilian with a fierce determination to carve out her own path in the United States. Her story is an inspiring testament to resilience, courage, and an unwavering spirit.

Fernanda, known as Ferr, touched down in the USA on October 28, 2015. It was a date etched in her memory, not just as her arrival but also as the start of her remarkable journey. Initially, her plan was to celebrate her birthday with friends in Vegas and spend six months improving her English while working as a nanny. However, fate had different plans for her. Back in Brazil, her family faced the crippling blow of her father's company declaring bankruptcy, leaving them without a source of income. At this moment, Ferr made a decision that would alter the course of her life: she chose to stay in the USA, hoping to leverage the favorable currency exchange to support her family.

The initial months were far from a walk in the park. She faced the immense challenge of building a life from scratch. Securing a full-time job proved to be a hurdle, and she had to rely on babysitting and working as a house cleaner to make ends meet. These jobs came with their share of hardships. Once, Fernanda worked tirelessly for a week cleaning houses, only to be paid a fraction of what she was owed. She stood up for herself, confronted her employer, and won the wages she rightfully deserved.

During her early days, Ferr sometimes had to make ends meet in unconventional ways. She even found herself sharing a room with other young girls and occasionally "borrowing" some of their food to get by. She recounted those tough times with humor like the days she pretended not to understand English when asked to verify her bus ticket.

A significant turning point came when Fernanda landed a job at Cleo's Steakhouse, where she not only earned a livelihood but also gained a newfound sense of stability. This opportunity allowed her to move into her own room, a far cry from the crowded space she once shared.

In this foreign land, Fernanda stumbled upon an unexpected love story. She met her husband on Tinder, a meeting she affectionately dubs as making her a "Tinderella." This romantic twist further enriched her American adventure.

Back in Brazil, Fernanda's career was already taking shape in human resources (HR). She inadvertently fell in love with HR, beginning as an intern and gradually ascending the ranks. Her journey led her to the United States, where she continued her career. Her ultimate ambition is to become a Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) at a renowned company.

Moving to a new country meant personal growth for Fernanda. She became more open-minded and less "machista," shedding old beliefs and learning new ways. Her experience led to an increase in self-confidence and authenticity, and she's proud of her ability to communicate her desires openly and honestly.

On a broader scale, she's eager to engage with important societal issues. Her interests span racial justice, equality in the workplace, and understanding the complex political landscape in the US. Fernanda is determined to get involved and make a meaningful impact.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Fernanda possesses a range of talents. She's skilled in cooking and baking, although it's not her favorite pastime. She claims to have a flair for singing, an ability to learn dance choreographies quickly, and a journey to overcome her fear of driving following a car accident.

Living away from her family, Fernanda has found an incredible support system within the "Keeping up with the Brazilians" (KUWT Brazilians) group. This network of friends, bonded by their shared immigrant experience, has become her chosen family in the United States. They gather for celebrations, provide support in challenging times, and offer unwavering camaraderie.

With each passing day, Fernanda's journey in the USA continues to evolve. Her inspiring story is a testament to her unwavering spirit and resilience. As she seeks to conquer new heights in her career, advocate for important societal issues, and nurture her diverse talents, Fernanda is a shining example of someone who thrives on embracing challenges rather than shying away from them.
